More Harmony's 15th Anniversary Concert Is A Super Success!

more harmony's 15th anniversary concert is a super success!

Well., here we are, one month on from our Fifteenth Anniversary Concert and believe me when I say, we're still only just com
ing back down to Earth!  After weeks of hard work, preparation and planning, on September 20th we celebrated fifteen years of More Harmony in style - and we were absolutely delighted with what a success it was!

More Harmony performing on stage at their 15th anniversary concertHaving been unable to celebrate our tenth anniversary in 2020 due to Covid restrictions, we were determined that our fifteenth should be a big event.  We also knew that we wanted to achieve two special things from it:

    1. Celebrate the rich culture of music in our local area.

    2. Raise some money for our charity of the year, Marie Curie.

To achieve the first of our aims, we were delighted to invite several guest performers to the event.  We welcomed InTune, Port Isaac Chorale, The Shipwrecks, Wadebridge Town Band and singer Charlotte Philps to entertain our audience.  They all did an absolutely fantastic job of showcasing just what a wealth of talent there is in Wadebridge and the surrounding areas.  A huge thank you to all of them for coming along and making the evening such a special one!  Music has such a phenomenal power to bring people together and it was wonderful to be surrounded by so many homegrown, independent musical groups.

Three of our members also took to the stage - Wenna Watts, performing alongside Charlotte Philps, and Alice Watts and Emma Tofi, singing a duet.  At More Harmony, we love to encourage our members to shine and seeing these women sing their hearts out was a very proud moment for all of us.  Of course, the chorus also performed two sets - both opening and closing the concert - and we were blown away by the response we got from the audience!  "Absolutely stunning" and "you sound phenomenal - as though there are three times as many of you as there really are!" were just two of the amazing comments we received after the show.  We are so grateful to everyone who came to support us!

To meet our second goal of raising money for charity, we decided that all proceeds from the bar should go towards Marie Curie, plus we held a fantastic prize raffle with all money made from ticket sales also going to Marie Curie.  We'd like to extend an enormous thank you to all of the wonderful local businesses and organisations who donated prizes, ranging from a weekend stay in Falmouth to meals out at local restaurants - and much more besides!

MD Lesley and Chair Person Sue had over a cheque to Marianne from Marie CurieThanks to the generosity of so many local businesses - and of our fabulous audience - we were able to raise £500 for Marie Curie.  We were delighted to welcome Marianne from the charity to a recent rehearsal, where we were able to hand over the cheque for this fantastic cause.

Of course, no show is complete without a host and ours went above and beyond for us!  We'd like to say a massive, heartfelt thank you to the wonderful Naomi Kennedy from BBC Radio Cornwall, who kept the show on track, entertained the audience and was just generally an all-round superstar!  Naomi was awesome - the perfect emcee - and everyone at More Harmony has been talking non-stop about what a great job she did!

The concert was a chance to show off what we do at More Harmony and we hope we did that in spades!  So many of our singers came to us as women who had never sung outside of the shower or their cars, only to fall in love with singing a cappella with us!  To give them their stage and let them show off all of their hard work was so important to us.  We are immensely proud of every woman who sings with us - not only for their voices, but for their enthusiasm and the fun they bring to rehearsals, not to mention the warm welcome they give to every new singer who walks through our doors.  One of the greatest compliments we received on the night was how "together" we seem.  We really are a close-knit bunch who look out for one another and help each other to be the best we can be.  It's that ethos of friendship and fun that has kept More Harmony going for fifteen years and we hope it keeps us going for another fifteen - and beyond!

We never forget those we've lost along the way and we were honoured to dedicate a song at the concert to those singers who are sadly no longer with us.  We were very touched to have the daughter of one such member as a VIP guest at the concert.  She even acted as our photographer - thank you Hayley!

More Harmony pose on stage at Wadebridge Town Hall, along with host Naomi Kennedy and VIP guestsSpeaking of thank yous, we also owe a big thank you to our other VIP guests for coming along to support the concert.  Mayor of Wadebridge Ian Welch, Zelda Grey of the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers, Kevin & Cathy Daisy from Wadebridge Music Festival, our former LABBS Liaison Officer Val Murray and her husband Andrew, Marianne and Adrian from Marie Curie, More Harmony's first ever MD, Sian Netherton and our former member and invaluable supporter Mel Baber.

Of course, we'd also like to thank everyone who came along to what we think was a fantastic evening of music and celebration right in the heart of Wadebridge!  You all clapped and cheered and helped to make it a night we'll always remember - thank you for making it so special.

Now, we're excitedly looking forward to the future!  We're busy rehearsing for Christmas - keep an eye on our socials to see where we'll be performing - and we're also planning an open rehearsal on November 6th.  We've already welcomed two new singers since the concert and we hope to continue growing our fab, friendly chorus, so if you're a woman aged 16+, we'd love you to join us on November 6th and see what we're all about!  We'll be learning two Christmas songs in a night and we're planning on making it a full-on festive occasion, so why not break out your Christmas jumper and come along?  There's no charge, so there's nothing to lose!  Join in the fun on Thursday November 6th, 7:15-9:30pm (doors open at 7pm) at Wadebridge Ambulance Hall.  Drop us a line to find out more.

    Concert Prep And Special Visits!

More Harmony members arranged into a new stack for singingWow, how fast is this year flying by?!

We've been keeping ourselves very busy here at More Harmony HQ, getting our repertoire fully polished ahead of our fifteenth birthday concert in September - not to mention all of the planning we've been doing for that event!

We're delighted to have some great guests already on the lineup for the big night.  Our fellow Wadebridge-based women's choir, In Tune will be joining us to sing some songs and we'll also be welcoming the children from St Wenn School Choir.  Wadebridge Town Band will be playing a few tunes and there are lots of other musical guests in the pipeline.  It promises to be a fantastic evening of entertainment, so please do keep Saturday September 20th free - and keep your eyes peeled, because tickets should be on sale by the end of this week!

Every great concert needs a fantastic host and we're overjoyed to have secured someone fabulous for our event.  We'll be announcing the big name later this week, so keep watch on our socials.  For now, all we'll say is it's someone whose voice may be familiar to anyone who listens to BBC Radio Cornwall...

Outside of concert prep, we've been thrilled to welcome a new singer to our lead section.  Gill is full of enthusiasm and has fitted into our chorus family like she was always there!  Gill received her membership certificate on a rather special night, too.

Gill receiving her More Harmony membership certificate from former LABBS Chair Sue Ransom and Musical Director Lesley-Anne HarrisWhilst More Harmony are proud to view ourselves as an independent choir, we are equally proud to be members of the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers ("LABBS" for short!).  More Harmony choose our own repertoire (and decide how we sing it!), pick costume and run our choir ourselves, but our membership of LABBS means we have access to guidance & support, education & coaching, funding and performance opportunities.  We've certainly made the most of our membership over the years and so it was a joy to welcome former LABBS Chair, Sue Ransom to our most recent rehearsal.  Many of us on the chorus committee have had invaluable advice from Sue over the years, so to meet her in person and have her sing with us for an evening was really lovely,  Plus, it meant she could officially welcome Gill to the chorus and to LABBS (we pay to enroll all of our singers with LABBS, so they can experience the many benefits that membership brings).  We'd like to thank Sue for visiting us all the way from Lancashire - please come back any time!

Following her visit, we had some fantastic feedback from Sue, including praise for the incredibly welcoming, friendly atmosphere we have at rehearsals.  The welcome we give to new singers is something we're very proud of and it was wonderful to have it recognised.

Speaking of new singers, We are open to new members, so if you're a woman aged 16+, do feel free to drop us a line or simply turn up to Wadebridge Ambulance Hall on a Thursday night (doors open at 7pm, rehearsal begins at 7:15pm!).  We're open to all voices, but we're especially looking for tenors - the highest voices in our choir.  Unlike in a traditional choir, where sopranos often belt out the tune, our tenor section sings a high harmony (although they do get the tune now and then!).  For that reason, we are especially keen to find women with softer tones.  We describe singing tenor as "the dusting of icing sugar on top of the cake!"  So, if you're someone who can hit higher notes and you think you can nail the light, sweet tone needed, we'd love to welcome you to a rehearsal!  You could be just what we're looking for.

As always however, whatever your vocal range or level of experience, if you love to sing, we've got a part for you.  Why not come along and give a cappella a try?!

    Sing-Outs And Celebrations!

    sing-outs and celebrations!

Summer season is well and truly swinging into high gear!  More Harmony have been busy with rehearsals, sing-outs and some seriously big plans....

We were recently delighted to join Wadebridge Male Voice Choir, along with soloist Bo Gregson, to perform in a concert at the beautiful St Petroc's Church in Bodmin.  This is one of our favourite places to sing and we loved being there to celebrate the many forms of music happening in our part of the world.  Music has an incredibMore Harmony Women's Choir singing in St Petroc's Church, Bodminle power to bring people together and this event was certainly no exception!  From modern musical theatre pieces and traditional choral songs, to classic pop and beautiful ballads, there was something for everyone to enjoy.  We'd like to say a big thank you to Wadebridge Male Voice Choir for inviting us!

We were back in action on Sunday 15th June, performing for the residents of The White House Care Home in Bodmin.  There's something really special about these kind of performances and we're so grateful to the staff for their enthusiasm and kindness.  We enjoyed food and wine afterwards and had the chance to chat to the residents and share our love for what we do.  The visit was made even more poignant for us by knowing that our performance had been specifically requested by the residents, following our Christmas visit, last year!  We've already been asked if we'll go and entertain everyone again this festive season, so that's something we'll definitely look forward to.  It's never too early to get those Christmas bookings in, believe it or not!  Music is truly the cherry on the cake of any celebration and we love being a part of people's events.

    Speaking of celebrations...

More Harmony will be celebrating its 15th birthday in September of this year!  Our fabulous choir turned 10 in 2020 and our plans for a celebratory concert were curtailed thanks to the small issue of a global pandemic...

This year, we hope to mark fifteen years of fun, friendship and harmony with a concert at Wadebridge Town Hall.  Whilst the plans are still in the early stages, the hall is booked for Saturday 20th September and we're already seriously excited about marking this special milestone!  Running a small, not-for-profit choir, whilst keeping costs down for our members and still providing plenty of exciting performance opportunities, is practically a second job for our dedicated MD and team of volunteers.  To have not only survived through Covid, when many choirs sadly folded, but to have continued to grow and thrive is a huge testament to the commitment and passion of our members.  With music opportunities abounding in the locality, we are delighted by the fact that we still get new singers through our doors - and even more overjoyed when they tell us what a wonderful, warm, friendly and supportive group More Harmony is.  If that's not worth celebrating, we don't know what is!  We're extraordinarily proud of what we've created at More Harmony and we can't wait to show off what we do.

Whilst tickets are not on sale yet, we can promise that anyone who comes along to celebrate our birthday with us will get to see some fabulous singing not only from us, but from other local groups, plus there'll be a raffle and plenty of refreshments on offer!

Rehearsals are in full swing and, as is always the case, have been full of laughter and joy as we prepare for such an exciting event.  Our rehearsals always begin with a gentle physical warm up and an all-important vocal warm-up and recently, our music team have outdone themselves with their ability to make this fun and inclusive!

All that remains for us to say is keep your eyes peeled over the coming weeks for more information about our "birthday party!"  And indeed, for us performing - we love to sing in the sunshine, so we doubt it'll be long before we're back out there, doing what we do best.

More Harmony is a choir for all women, regardless of experience.  All we ask is that you bring your enthusiasm and can attend regular rehearsals - we'll do the rest!  So, if you're a woman aged 16+ and you love singing, why not come along and do some with us?!  Email us for more details, or simply come along to Wadebridge Ambulance Hall on a Thursday night from 7pm -  no appointment required.  We look forward to welcoming you!
